we tabled at DIY cultures yesterday and it was good but very busy and a little overwhelming, so i was kind of absolutely knackered afterwards. still kind of am. anyway, i spoke to some newbie zinesters who asked for advice (honestly my advice is mainly just DO IT) and i wished i had managed to print more copies of the practical zine making guide minizine i made for the workshop i did at southbank centre last october as the minizine has a handy practical guide for making the flats for printing, which i think might be the trickiest bit to figure out, since you can make a zine about ANYTHING. so i thought i’d scan it and put it online for all to see and use if they need it. you can also download the guide as a printable pdf in mini zine form HERE or HERE. but i warn you it might not print 100% right cos margins 🙁
hope it’s helpful. now get making zines y’all!
see you this sunday? maybe bring me coffee? (milk, 1 sugar. ha ha)
oh noes. i can’t believe how long it has taken us to update the website with all the new zines we acquired at sheffield zine fest last month D: but it’s finally done, with just some descriptions missing (what else is new?)
NEW IN STOCK: BROWN GIRL, ELDERFLOWER #1, FANZINE YNFYTYN #22, HERE. IN MY HEAD #14, HERE.IN MY HEAD #15, I DON’T BRUISE EASILY #1, I DON’T BRUISE EASILY #2, I’M DRAWING A BLANK #2, MYTHOLOGISING ME #9, RUMLAD #6/GADGIE #31, RUMLAD #7, SCRATCH THAT ITCH #4, TEMPEST IN A TEACUP #7.
in other news, we have TWO fabulous zine fests we will be tabling at in the end of May = DIY Cultures in london and Northwest Zine Fest in manchester. also your distro mistress tukru is currently taking pre-orders for Your Pretty Face is Going Straight to Hell #21, it will be done in time for the zine fests. it will mostly be about moving to our new home / headquarters. (she’s already got 30 pages cut & pasted ready to go so it will be done very soon) just paypal £3 to firstname.lastname@example.org (preferably as a personal payment with your address in the notes) she’s kinda broke as heck so it would be nice if you could help out (also ordering from the distro helps, though generally distro funds go to more stock, but these are hard times!)
this saturday (14th March) we will be at Sheffield Zine Fest. for more info visit their facebook event page and/or twitter. if you can make it, you should totally come! it’ll be our third year in row and it’s always been lots of fun. maybe this year we’ll even make the helter skelter?
lots of other zine fest news too. NorthWest ZineFest was just announced the other day; it will be happening at the Star and Garter in Manchester on saturday 30th May. you can visit their facebook event page, and/or twitter for more details. we’ve just applied for our table of course! pretty excited, i’ve only been to manchester once, when my old flat mate dragged me there to see marion reform about eight and a half years ago, though i’ve gone through it on the megabus many times.
it’s a busy spring zine fest wise. we’re still waiting for confirmation for a table at DIY Cultures in london on may 24th (fingers crossed we get one!) as for zine fests that are happening this spring but we will unfortunately be missing, there is the previously mentioned InZine Fest III on 21st March at The Pod in Coventry (fb event), and then there is also Glasgow Zine Fest on 4th April at the Old Hairdressers (fb event & twitter)
i guess we kinda tend to hibernate in november/december time (daytime job in retail doesn’t help) and it takes the month of january to get back to normal? who knows.
first of all, we now have an instagram account = @vampiresushidistro if you wanna follow it for whatever reason. we’ll try to post pictures there of new stock and from zine events, could be fun! in other news, we finally managed to properly update the website with some new (& back in stock) zines that have been lingering in our stock box for a while, since the last zine fests and stuff.
NEW IN STOCK: hard femme #2, sonorus #2, vampire sushi V, working class queers #1.
BACK IN STOCK: hard femme #1, sonorus #1.
in zine fest news, it was announced last week that SHEFFIELD ZINE FEST is back on March 14th!! *does a happy dance* we’ve sent off our table application; fingers crossed, cannot wait! it was also announced that this years DIY CULTURES will be on 24th May at the Rich Mix in London. we’ve sent off our table application there too. i’m still gutted we couldn’t make it last year; we were just way too busy packing for our big move D:
Zine Fair Brighton is also coming up on 22nd February, but unfortunately we won’t be there cos a) we’re broke and despite brighton being very not that far, it’s an expensive pain to get to on public transport from chatham (have to go up to london and then come down again.) and b) we missed out on the tables anyway, they’re all gone now. but if you can get to brighton on 22nd, you should totally go! i’m sure it’ll be a good time. and speaking of zine fests we cant make it to…. InZine Fest III on 21st March in Coventry unfortunately we won’t make it there either due to £££, distance and the fact it’s too close to some other plans (sleater-kinney..) but once again, if you can get there, you should do it. no such thing as too many zine fests!
hey hey. the website has a new layout. any problems with it/anything not working, please let us know? and we also have some news. this weekend we’ve confirmed tables at TWO ZINE FESTS for November!
first of all, there is South East London Zine Fair (fb event) on 1st of November at Montague Arms (289 Queens Road, London, SE14 5JN) later on in the month, on 29th November, we’ll be at Zine World / Kilburn Zine & Comic Fair at South Kilburn Studios. (fb event) but we’ll mention that again closer to the date 😉
